The band's music was produced by former Tony! Toni! Tone! member D'Wayne Wiggins. Kehlani's singing career effectively began when they started out as a member and lead vocalist for the group called PopLyfe. Career 2009–2013: Beginnings with PopLyfe When they were 14, Kehlani was recruited to join a local pop cover band, Poplyfe. While living with their aunt, Kehlani was exposed almost exclusively to R&B and neo soul artists, such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, whom today they describe as some of their early musical influences. Įarly in their life, Kehlani aspired to train as a dancer at the Juilliard School, but they had a knee injury in junior high, which led them to turn their attention towards singing. During their teenage years, they attended the Oakland School for the Arts, where they initially practiced dance, particularly ballet and modern dance. Kehlani's father, who also had a drug addiction, died when they were a toddler. They have described their ethnicity as a mix of "Black White" They were adopted and raised by their aunt when their mother, who had a drug addiction, served time in jail. Kehlani Ashley Parrish was born on April 24, 1995, in Oakland, California. 2.3 2018–present: It Was Good Until It Wasn't and Blue Water Road.I’ll be sure to follow up once the vinyl is in my hands. Right now she’s halfway through a tour supporting the album, which if you haven’t had an opportunity to check it out then you’re definitely missing out.

I’m interested in watching her progression and wonder what a sophomore album from her will sound like. The disc is still available from the Atlantic Records site. It’s also worth noting she’s released a “ CRZY/Distraction” 7” Picture Disc to add to the collection.

The double LP will be released on pink vinyl July 28th. Through a partnership with chain retailer Urban Outfitters Kehlani says her dream is finally coming true. Scrolling through her Instagram, often sprinkled with inspirational quotes and personal anecdotes, the excitement that she would be releasing a limited edition 2-disc LP was palpable. The deluxe edition spans eighteen tracks and clocks in just shy of an hour with no features. (One that almost didn’t see the light of day after an attempted suicide.) When the album went up for pre-order, the looming question was if the lengthy album would get a vinyl release. An album slow cooked after inking a deal with Atlantic Records. SweetSexySavage is the child of those two former releases. You Should Be Here, her Grammy nominated second mixtape, strayed from the samples to give a glimpse of her musical future. Check Bryson Tiller’s sophomore album which samples SWV’s Rain or the Tanto Metro and Devante bite on Tory Lanez hit Luv. The sample heavy Soundcloud release Cloud 9, could have been stocked on shelves during the 90s. The 90s is an easy reference for Kehlani, the sound is all over the airwaves. A rare feat for an indie artist more familiar with crafting mixtapes instead of a proper album. From her smoky runs on the Pop & Oak produced Distraction to the bonus track Gangsta from the Suicide Squad OST, she’s crafted a cohesive debut album. SweetSexySavage, an album title clearly inspired by TLC’s CrazySex圜ool embodies the influence of early 90’s R&B.
